Major Gifts Officer

Bergen Community College, serving a diverse student body on its suburban campus, has an opportunity for a Major Gifts Officer to be a leader in fundraising and manage identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship for assigned prospects with high levels of giving ability. The Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for providing expertise for designing, planning and implementing a major gift plan that strengthens Bergen Community College’s donor base and proactively builds the donor pipeline. The Major Gifts Officer will also be expected to manage a growing portfolio of donors and prospects at the major gifts level to achieve fundraising targets and meet monthly and annual goals for donors through the development cycle, including visits, dollars solicited and dollars raised in addition to other duties as assigned. This position reports to the President of the College and the Chairman of the Foundation Board.

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor’s degree preferred. Five (5) years of work related experience. Current and valid driver’s license required to travel to various off-site locations. Official transcripts and 3-5 donor references required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Advanced general computer knowledge of Windows and network-based environments, exceptional skills and experience with products such as Raiser’s Edge (client relationships’ software) and Prospect Research platform.
  • Demonstrated experience in major gift and/or fundraising experience, with proficiency in fundraising principles and best practices.
  • Experience in managing and/or administering annual budgets in excess of $1 million dollars.
  • Strong working knowledge of strategic development and moves management systems in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship processes.
  • Proven record in exceeding fundraising goals, including demonstrated experience with securing major, high-value gifts from prospects.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and maintaining positive relationships with diverse individuals, including executives, donors, as well as internal stakeholders and leadership.
  • The ability to conduct research needed to acquire the necessary context, background and information required to solicit gifts from individuals.
  • Extensive experience in leading the development of ongoing Foundation strategic planning with the ability to establish priorities, oversees progress towards goals, track details, understand data analysis; and integrate the work of prospect research achieving overall strategic goals.
  • Ability to reconcile competing interest and build support from competing constituencies.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with demonstrated ability to create, implement and monitor complex plans and translate those plans into goals and concrete strategies.
  • Adhere to ethical and confidentiality guidelines of Bergen Community College and required knowledge of local, state and federal laws governing fund-raising and taxation.
  • Knowledge and experience in the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, motivations for giving, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques, including face-to-face solicitation, including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting.
  • Knowledge of principles of institutional advancement, development, and philanthropy.
  • Experience with systems, processes and work alliances in a complex, collaborative organization.
  • A clear understanding of community leadership dynamics and volunteer development.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills with the ability to serve as an advocate/spokesperson for Bergen Community College and successfully tailor communications to diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to take risks and solve problems creatively.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor and the ability to be flexible.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously with a high level of independence and initiative and significant inter and cross department collaboration and support.
  • Ethical, principle-based leader who communicates high standards and expectations.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the community college mission and practices an open door policy.
  • Excellent customer service, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and succinctly with consideration to various audiences.
