Department/Division Introduction

The Student Affairs Division provides a series of services for the College at its Paramus campus, Lyndhurst and Hackensack locations including the administration of Financial aid, Bursar, Admissions, Advising, Registration, Athletics, Summer Intensive, Testing, Student Life and Conduct, and NJ Stars. The division strives to enable the college to carry out its overall mission by continually improving the quality of our services to meet the College’s needs.

The Student Support Services/Advising department supports students as they practice skills and habits for academic success, learn with and from their peers, and reflect on their ongoing development as budding scholars.

Through partnerships with BCC faculty and staff, our work promotes a college culture that responds to students’ needs and affirms each student’s ability to achieve their goals.

Position Summary/Job Description

An Academic coach promotes student success in support of the College’s mission statement, program policies and procedures, and in accordance with established goals and objectives, policies, and procedures of the Student Affairs Division. Academic coaches provide students with academic advising, major exploration assistance, facilitate educational programming, and assist with course registration.  Coaches also assist in the execution of the Student Success Plan, which is part of the College’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing the knowledge base to help provide general advising, registration, and financial aid services for students.
  • Using data driven strategies to assess students’ academic progress towards degree completion.
  • Tracking, monitoring and following up with all students under assigned cohorts, and using data to document retention and attrition statistics.
  • Compiling and analyzing demographic data of students.
  • Documenting case notes and maintaining records.
  • Creating reports and compiling information to evaluate and adjust program as needed.
  • Planning, organizing and coordinating activities, trainings and workshops for program initiatives.
  • Developing and implementing program policies and procedures.
  • Serving as a resource to faculty and staff on issues pertaining to supporting students and functioning as a liaison to community-based resources.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Associate’s degree considered with two years higher education advising experience.
  • Two years of experience working with nontraditional students within an institution of higher education.
  • Experience working in student advising.
  • Knowledge and understanding of FERPA is preferred.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and statutes relating to the rights of individuals with disabilities with specific.
  • Able to maintain accurate files and records to ensure documentation in compliance with established policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Must possess excellent student service skills and have ability to multi-task assignments.
  • Must be a team player with the ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with various computer software programs including Microsoft Office suite, Ellucian-Colleague (formerly Datatel) or similar higher education platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with a culturally diverse population and to effectively and respectfully function and communicate within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Federal and NJ State financial aid regulations a plus.
  • Experience working with a culturally and socioeconomically diverse student population is highly desirable.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred but not required.
