Assistant Director of Payroll

Bergen Community College, the No. 1 institution in New Jersey for associate degree graduates four years in a row, serving a diverse student body on its suburban campus, has a leadership opportunity for an Assistant Director of Payroll.  At the direction of the Director of Human Resources and Employee Relations, the Assistant Director will lead the day-to-day operations of the Payroll department, oversee design and implementation for payroll related projects, and directs the team in completion of all payroll processing and production related activities; manages the activities of the payroll department in carrying out the responsibility for payroll preparation/processing, tax reporting and payroll system maintenance, ensures all processes are executed appropriately and in a timely manner and ensures adherence to all government tax code regulations, employment contracts and generally accepted accounting principles.  The Assistant Director directly supervises the Senior Payroll Generalists.


Bachelor’s Degree in finance, business or related field required; Master’s Degree in Business Management or related field preferred; CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) designation a plus;   Minimum of 5 or more years of payroll experience with increasing responsibilities, including demonstrated payroll management experience; comprehensive and working knowledge of integrated human resources/payroll systems (Colleague preferred), particularly with end-to-end payroll functions preferred; possesses comprehensive knowledge of payroll best practices and procedures and maintains a working knowledge of existing and new legislation; experience in working with union and non-union environments as well as experience in performance appraisals and feedback, training and mentoring payroll staff and supporting employees.  Demonstrated skill to work with a variety of computer software, database management and other payroll management software applications with strong, independent project management skills; must be a working manager and self-starter with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast pace environment with minimal supervision.  Demonstrates understanding of the community college mission; exhibits strong skills in leadership, managing people, communication, customer and student focus, building relationships, organizing and planning.
