The HVAC Mechanic position is responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of the College’s HVAC systems and related electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment including water and oil pumps. Works on HVAC rooftop units and split units and chillers. Responsibilities include water analyses and chemical treatments; air compressors, pneumatic, electrical and mechanical controls; refrigeration, heating, cooling and ventilating equipment; filters, condensers, cooling towers, evaporators and heat exchangers; installing electric power, piping, controls, and duct work to repair, replace, maintain or install equipment; ensuring sound safety procedures are followed at all times; trains other HVAC technicians and staff in preventative maintenance and protocols; escorts outside contractors/vendors for repairs and maintenance of HVAC systems; maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of department spaces; prepares materials lists required to maintain inventory and complete projects; uses the computer to maintain logs and records and prepares written reports; performs other duties as assigned.
Required: High School diploma or equivalent including vocational or technical school education, or a relevant apprenticeship is required. Must have eight plus years’ experience in HVAC field; must have a Universal Certificate. Blue Seal License and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification required or wiliness to obtain. Must have knowledge and experience operating, repairing and maintaining HVAC equipment and controls according to manufacturer’s specifications, i.e. valves, motors, belts, bearings, filter, and lubrication. Experience working with outside contractors/vendors in repair and/or maintenance of HVAC systems preferred. Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position including the ability to lift and transport heavy equipment; climb ladders and work in high places and on the roof; work in unconditioned confined spaces that are hot or cold and be able to work in all types of weather. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Valid Driver’s License and the ability to drive in the State of New Jersey is required. Must be able to work a rotating shift any day of the week and work with a diverse population.
