Bergen Community College invites all highly qualified and experienced individuals to apply for the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled strategist to work with the College’s Executive Team during a transformational time to envision, propose, and implement change with a proven record of engaging faculty, staff and other partners in the College’s mission “To inspire our community to realize a better future.” This individual will be committed to leading the academic arm of the College with data-driven, intentional, innovative, and proactive strategies to strengthen student access and success.
As the College’s chief academic officer, the Vice President for Academic Affairs reports to the President and oversees the College’s existing and new curricular initiatives; faculty hiring and promotion; support for faculty projects and teaching; and administration of all academic departments and programs; must inspire the respect and confidence of the faculty, students, staff and alumni by being committed to energizing Bergen’s distinctive educational experience and bring a fresh perspective and vision that will help the college achieve its objectives. Working with departments, the Equity and Student Success Committee, and the Deans, leads the effort to define and fill academic positions with special attention to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty to reflect and support our diverse student population.
In partnership with the President and Executive Vice President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs must have the objectivity and inclination to be a spokesperson for the College’s core academic mission to both internal and external audiences. The VPAA is expected to lead internal discussions on academic planning, curriculum development, faculty governance, and other issues related to teaching, scholarship, and faculty development; and to support the BCC Foundation in its fundraising efforts. Responsible for a budget of approximately $45 million, the VPAA must leverage data-driven decision-making to be an effective and proactive manager and will work collaboratively with the Vice President of Student Affairs to lead the College’s efforts at promoting campus learning and be engaged in educational activities beyond the campus.
Doctoral degree required; Minimum of 10 years of progressive administrative/teaching experience in higher education including experience as a department chair or dean, preferably in a community college setting and 2 years’ experience in a collective bargaining environment preferred. Demonstrates understanding of the community college mission; demonstrated successful experience in strategic planning, accreditation, fiscal management, resource allocation and personnel supervision; demonstrated record of serving as an advocate for faculty while utilizing data to inform decision-making; ability to promote the collection, use and governance of data to inform organizational decision-making in ways that positively impact student learning; experience fulfilling a vision for academic affairs at a transformational time for an institution and proven success of change management; facilitate organizational development and change with effective collaboration of participants, demonstrated commitment and leadership of diversity, inclusion, equity and social justice in higher education; demonstrated experience fostering strong relationships with unions, institutional senates and implementing collective bargaining agreements; possesses a strong understanding of the use of information technology to deliver, monitor and evaluate programs; excellent analytical ability, including the ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents; excellent written and oral communication skills, including making effective and persuasive speeches and presentations to internal and external audiences; exhibits strong skills in leadership, managing people, communication, customer service, student focus, building relationships, organizing and planning; demonstrated competency in budget and project management; demonstrated ability to work with a variety of computer software, database management, and employee management software applications; technologically proficient in common office desktop software, cloud software and collaborative cloud platforms.
